Current Activities Test Standards The PCTC recently completed a report summarizing the findings of a research project on the development of test standards for durability of coal tar sealers using the scrub test, field fuel resistance test, and freeze/thaw cracking test. The report presents the data produced during the development of these tests and summarizes the recommended test procedures in a ready to implement format. The report is entitled: "Development of Tests for Coal Emulsion Sealers." Evaluation of Coal Tar Emulsion The PCTC is currently working on a research project to identify the performance characteristics of coal tar emulsion sealers. The objective of this research is to investigate the impact of the various components of the coal tar emulsion on its long term performance. The evaluated components include: additives and clay. The long term performance of the emulsion is simulated through laboratory aging of the materials which simulates field conditions. Evaluation of Field Test Sections The PCTC is currently evaluating the field performance of test sections applied on asphalt pavements in Reno, Nevada, and Kansas City, Missouri. The sections include various levels of sand loading and clear coating. The sections were applied during October, 1998 and are still performing very well.
Updates on ASTM activities ASTM D 08.09 Subcommittee on Bituminous Emulsions
ASTM D 04.43 Subcommittee on Specifications and Tests for Tar and Tar Products
The next meeting is scheduled for
Toronto, Canada June 11 - 14.
